Yes, basically it is just remembering what each group looks like.
Explanation:
All "functional groups" are combinations of atoms that act together in reactions. Common ones are carboxylic (acid) groups, the ketone/ester/ether groups, amines, amides, alcohols, nitrides, nitrates, sulfates/sulfides and so on.
