Endorphin is endogenous 'feel good' factor which acts like morphine. The chemical binds to opioid receptors of the peripheral nervous system and inhibits transmission of pain signals.

Both intense physical activity or eating hot pepper can trigger secretion of endorphin in the body. It provides a sense of satisfaction to the individual.

Lack of endorphin may therefore, lead to mental illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
