What function do proteins perform in the cell membrane?

There are probably many more, which I invite others to share, but one that's salient is identification of various molecules.
When these receptors are bonded to molecules like vesicles of whatever the cell wishes to absorb/excrete, it allows passage into the cell membrane.
Think of these proteins as I.D. badges.
