Although formal English grammar does not dictate that one should not repeat themselves, exact repetition of a phrase sometimes draws unwanted attention.
For example, of the two sentences "I looked to the east, and to the west" and "I looked to the east, and I looked to the west", the latter places more emphasis on the action of looking.
