The spherical or oval shaped bacteria are termed as cocci.

Explanation:

Cocci (singular = coccus) have several distinct arrangements based on their planes of division as discussed below:

  • Diplococcus and Streptococcus:
If division occur in one plane then it will produce either diplococcus or streptococcus arrangenment.

When cocci occur in pairs then the arrangement is called diplococcus.

  • Tetrad:
It is an arrangement which arises by the division of cocci in two planes. It is basically a square of four cocci.

- Sarcina:
When the division is in three planes, it produces sarcina arrangement. Sarcina is a cube of eight cocci.

- Staphylococcus:
When division is in random planes, it leads to staphylococcus arrangement. In this, cocci are arranged in irregular, often grape-like clusters.
