1. The jury asked him if he remembered saying that.

• In this case, The reporting speech is in present tense....but the reporting verb is in past tense...hence,"remember" is changed to "remembered"." saying" is only participle here...as it is not finite verb,there is no change...

2.My father asked me why he preferred living aboard.

• In this case,the reporting speech is in present tense,hence in direct speech ,the verb is transformed to past tense...and "I" changes to "he".
