Being amino acids' polymer; proteins mostly constitute nitrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen & sometimes they also contain sulfur and phosphorus.

So as we can see in the above figure that amino acid contain hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen as essential elements. And R is variant which means that amino acids could be very diverse depending upon the nature of #R#-#group#.

As in case of methionine and cysteine amino acids, the variant side chains R contain sulfur.

And as far as phosphorus is concerned then it's found only in some proteins which are subject to post translational modifications, such as phosphorylation.
