Hirohito was the grandson of Emperor Meiji. He became emperor on the death of his father, Emperor Taisho, on December 1926. He was therefor the 124th emperor of Japan in direct lineage. However, to gain public support and gain power, he used a democratic sentiment. But, he changed sides and turned to ultra-nationalism and militarism.
