Grignard reagents are reactive in nature and in the presence of moisture they react to give alkanes.

Explanation:

Dry Ether has a tendency to absorb some amount of moisture from the atmosphere.

So, in order to prevent the conversion of grignard reagent into an alkane we use dry ether in the rection.
