The base of the skull has got a bone named as occipital bone, its condylar part has two occipital condyles whose lower surface bears facets which articulates with similar type of facets present over the superior articular processes of the 1st cervical vertebra or Atlas(bears the globe of the body) and together forms an ellipsoid joint(a type of synovial joint)known as Atlanto occipital joint, which allows flexion extension movement only.
