He was "scared" that the officers would find out his identity and also, he had a feeling the old man somehow survived.
Explanation:
The story said he 'could still hear his heart beating, faster, faster, until it was almost unbearable!' The officers were mocking him, perhaps they already knew it was him anyways. He knew his future ahead of him, it probably would get worse later on, so he admitted.
