During the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water in the presence of absorbed sunlight is used for production of food for plants. Oxygen is released from the breakdown of water in the chloroplast during photosynthesis.

Thus oxygen release by chloroplasts indicates the ongoing process of photosynthesis.
