Sign(x)

Explanation:

#(-x)^2# is always a positive number, as any number to the power of 2 is positive ( in this case, the number is (-x) ).
on the other hand, #-(x^2)# is completely another thing. #-(x^2)# is always a negative number because:
#x^2# is positive
#-(x^2)# means the opposite of #x^2#
