Life for blacks just after the Civil War was just as bad as before the Civil War. They, technically, had rights, but the southern states put out Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow was a fictional character. He was in plays, played by white people with black pain on their face. They made all black people seem stupid through Jim Crow. Anyway, Jim Crow laws were made to separate blacks, and whites. They said that blacks and whites couldn't get married, they couldn't have the same bathroom, they couldn't have the same bus spot, etc.
