Although the administration was full of support for the uprising very little could be done for two reasons

a) Any direct intervention would have almost certainly triggered the cold war in Europe to go hot with the spectre of nuclear war that that might have entailed, there were hawks in the administration who may well of advocated that but wiser heads prevailed

b) Diplomatic intervention was hamstrung as the Uprising occurred at the same time as the Anglo-French intervention in Egypt (the "Suez Crisis") which left the US in the position that if it were to condemn Soviet actions it would also have to condemn Anglo-French actions
