What is six and one fourth multiplyed by three and three tenths?

i know that you do this: you have to turn the whole numbers into improper fractions, but i'm having trouble remembering the process.

See a solution process below for:

#6 1/4 xx 3 3/10#

Explanation:

First, convert each mixed number to an improper fraction:

#6 1/4 = 6 + 1/4 = (4/4 xx 6) + 1/4 = 24/4 + 1/4 = (24 + 1)/4 = 25/4#

#3 3/10 = 3 + 3/10 = (10/10 xx 3) + 3/10 = 30/10 + 3/10 = (30 + 3)/10#

#= 33/10#

Now we can multiply:

#25/4 xx 33/10#

First, cancel common terms in the numerators and denominators:

#(5 xx 5)/4 xx 33/(5 xx 2) => (color(red)(cancel(color(black)(5))) xx 5)/4 xx 33/(color(red)(cancel(color(black)(5))) xx 2) => 5/4 xx 33/2#

We can now multiply the numerators over the denominators:

#(5 xx 33)/(4 xx 2) => 165/8#

If necessary, we can convert the to a mixed number as:

#165/8 = (160 + 5)/8 = 160/8 + 5/8 = 20 + 5/8 = 20 5/8#
