Friction tends to slow down an objects motion.
Explanation:
Friction is defined as
Friction acts in a direction
For example,
When a box is slides over another box, due the the molecular interactions b/w the surfaces of the two boxes and the pits and bumps on them, friction is produced which tends to oppose the motion. .
Friction can be reduced by using lubricants.
For instance, there is more friction if a car moves over a dry road than when it moves over a wet road.
The energy to do work against friction is lost as heat.
