`x+y=1` so `y=1-x` then you take this `y` value and you put it in the equation above

`x^2+2(1-x)=5`
`x^2-2x-3=0`

Then use the quadratic formula

`=(-(-2)+-sqrt((-2)^2-(1*(-3))))/2`

from where `x=-1` and `x=3`
