Planets [revolve] around the sun due to the sun's gravitational force exerted on them.

Explanation:

As the solar system formed, clouds of dust were attracted by gravity and clumped up, forming planets. The densest part in the centre of the solar system formed the sun. The planets were attracted to the sun's large mass. However, collisions of planets with sapce debris caused the planets to move in directions tangent to or away from the direction of the force of their attraction to the sun at an angle. Since the attraction to the sun was still strong enough, orbitals formed (with the planets moving around the sun due centrifugal and centripetal forces) and the planets remained in orbit.

Here is a diagram illustrating how centrifugal and centripetal forces work.
