When ending a sentence with quotation marks that are used to frame a quote or expression (as opposed to framing dialogue), should I place the ending period inside or outside the quotation marks?

Inside.
Explanation:
You're quoting what someone is saying or had said, so you would place the punctuation inside of the quotation marks.
Example:
"We could go to the movies, or something." Alex had said
