How were quasars discovered?

They were thought to be radio signals but in 1963 Maarten Schmidt realized that these "radio lines" were simply the bright emission lines from the hydrogen clouds that shifted different wavelengths.

Explanation:

This phenomenon was to be named quasar (quasi-stellar radio source) since it looked like a star but couldn't possibly be one since it was so bright.

Explanation:

In 1963 astronomer Maarten Schmidt was studying what they thought was a star named 3C 273 when he saw that the star had a strange spectral light that according to Hubble's law, had to be billions of light-years away and shined brighter than a million of galaxies combined.
