What are conservative forces?

Conservative forces are forces that do not dissipate energy (they instead conserve it). In other words, the total work done in moving a body is independent of the path taken.

Examples of conservative forces include gravity or spring force, while some non-conservative (dissipative forces) are friction or Stoke force.
