The total number of adult tickets and student tickets sold was 100. The cost for adults was $5 per ticket and the cost for students were $3 per ticket for a total of $380. How many of each tickets were sold?

Explanation:

Number of adult tickets sold`=x`

Number of student tickets sold`=y`

The total number of adult tickets and student tickets sold was 100.

`=> x+y = 100`

The cost for adults was $5 per ticket and the cost for students were $3 per ticket

Total cost of `x` tickets `= 5x`

Total cost of `y` tickets `=3y`

Total cost `= 5x+3y = 380`

Solving both the equations,

`3x+3y=300`
`5x+3y=380` [Subtracting both]

`=> -2x=-80`

`=>x=40`

Therefore `y=100-40=60`
