The number of protons present in the atom is knowns as atomic number. It can also be defined as the number of electrons present in a neutral atom. Each elements has it's own At. no. .
Mathematically, atomic number = no. of protons = no. of electrons
or, Atomic number = number of p^+p+ or number of e^-e
For example, in one hydrogen atom, number of p^+ = 1p+=1
:. atomic number = 1
In one carbon atom, number of p^+ = 6
:. Atomic number = 6

Hence we can conclude that the Number of protons or electrons present in the atom, determines the Atomic number .
