The BEST digestion occurs with the esophagas-stomach-intestine aligned vertically.

Explanation:

While our bodies CAN process food under a variety of conditions, poses and stressed, it is most effective when the alignment of the first key organs in the pathway are vertical - providing a "gravity assist" to the proper flow direction.

SOME studies show that lying down may be helpful - but only in terms of relaxation and allowing the body to focus energy on the digestive process. IF lying down it is important to lie on ones right side to enhance the flow of digested food from the stomach to the small intestine. Also, a slight incline of the torso will help to avoid "reflux" of stomach contents into the esophagus (heartburn).
