Why do chemistry texts write the first law of thermodynamics as ΔU=Q+W?

Depends upon the definition:

#Delta U = Q_("in") - W_("done by")# -
#Delta U = Q_("in") + W_("done on")#
Second one is more preferred by Chemistry texts.
