In introductory chemistry, this explanation will suffice:
Atoms want to be stable, they are happy then. When they have 8 electrons in their valence shell, like the noble gas atoms, they are most stable.
Hence, to accomplish this end, they will attempt to bond or take electrons in any way they can to attain this configuration.
