Tsunamis are caused by earth quakes.

Explanation:

At the boundaries of the various tectonic plates there is the constant motion of one plate diving beneath the other. But it is not a smooth process. For example, where the Pacific plate near South America sublimates there may be little or no motion for a long period of time. Yet the pressure of the one plate upon the other continues to build until a breaking point is reach and the Pacific Plate, in this case, suddenly falls. The release of a very large amount of energy at that time causes the creation of a very large and strong wave.

That large shift also created an earth quake of course. However, not all earth quakes cause tsunamis.

In 2004 a 9.1 magnitude megathrust earthquake struck the western coastline of Sumatra, Indonesia. this in turn displaced a large amount of body of water as a colossal wave. The water wave propagated from its epicenter, destroying coastal infrastructure and claiming nearly 250,000 lives across 15 countries.

and as you know earthquakes occur anywhere where there seismic activity. For details how earthquakes are triggered I refer you to a review in plate tectonics. Hopefully this helps.
