food can be defined as starches and sugars. So experiments that show the presence or loss these compounds illustrate that plants use and store food.

Explanation:

One experiment is the reaction of iodine with starch. Take a plant root rinse it with alcohol and then add iodine if the root turns black or dark purple starch is present showing food has been stored in the the plant.

For a control use powdered starch add iodine and it will turn black or dark purple.

Burning of sugar is respiration that shows plants are using of food.

In respiration sugar plus oxygen is changed to carbon dioxide and water.

Place a plant in a closed container and put the container in a dark place so no photosynthesis can take place. Examine the container after a period of time. The presence of water droplets on the glass is an indication of respiration. Take a lighted match and place it in the glass jar. The match show go out showing the lack of oxygen and the presence of carbon dioxide again indicating respiration the using of food.

For a control test a similar jar with the plant examine the jar before water droplets. There show not be any at the beginning. Also place the lighted match in the jar it show burn for a while showing the presence of oxygen
