Saturated alkanes can indeed be branched.

Given a hydrocarbon of #n# carbons, the hydrocarbon is SATURATED if the formula is #C_nH_(2n+2)#. Every 2 hydrogens LESS than the saturated formula specifies the presence of an olefinic bond OR a ring junction. So saturated alkanes can exhibit branching.
