The yeast derives life-energy from this. The alcohol is a waste product, that will evenually kill the yeast cells when the concentration becomes too high.
We use this kind of fermentation a lot. The example above is used for making alcoholic drinks, and for making bread.
Another example is the lactic acid fermentation, which will turn cabbage into sauerkraut.
