"A return to normalcy" was Warren G. Harding's campaign slogan for the 1920 Presidential race (He won). Americans yearned for a pre-war innocence and mindframe that was forever gone and instead of "normalcy" (an actual dictionary word since before the Civil War), America got speakeasies, the Jazz Age and rapacious stock trading for the remainder of the 1920s.
