Its probably the development of the New World.

Explanation:

The European countries wanted to exploit the newly discovered Americas to make money and get new resources. They needed labor to do so. The first solution was to round up the local people and put them to work. The local people either died from new European diseases and/or overwork or left.

The Portuguese saw the North African slave trade and thought they would tap into this source of labor. By purchasing slaves from Arab and West African slave dealers they were able to create a steady stream of labor for the new colonies. These slaves died at a prodigious rate from new world diseases and overwork but new slaves arrived steadily enough that the new colonies could be maintained. Settled areas in the Americas expanded.
