Most of the settlers used wagons pulled either by mules or oxen for transportation along the Oregon trail.

Explanation:

There are still places where the wagon ruts of the Oregon trail can still be seen. The "covered' wagons were shelter and storage for the settlers as they traveled the Oregon Trail.

The people except the driver of the wagon mainly walked along the side of the wagon. Many people walked the entire distance of the Oregon Trail to reduce the strain on the animals pulling the wagon.
Even then the Oregon Trail was littered with items that were thrown out of the wagons to reduce the weight.

A few people rode horses along side the wagons. The scouts and guides had horses but they were the exception. The wagon and shoe leather were the main forms of transportation.
