First Grant won important battles such as Fort Cotton, opening up the upper Mississippi for the Union. Then Grant won the Battle of Shiloh though it was near thing. Grant also relieved the siege at Chattanooga, an important but costly victory.

Grant's most important accomplishment were the brilliant tactical movements that led to siege and final victory at Vicksburg. Once Vicksburg fell and the south was defeated at Gettysburg the south had no hope of a military victory in the Civil War.

In 1864 Grant was recalled from the Western Campaign to lead the army of Potomic in the East. Sherman who had been Grant's second in command took over the command of the Western Campaign.

Sherman was responsible for the Union Victory at Atlanta followed by Sherman's famous march to the sea.

Other general contributed but by far the most important general in the west was U.S, Grant and his second in command general Sherman.
