Genes for different characteristics can be inherited together. This is called genetic linkage.

Genes on different chromosomes will always inherit independently of each other. However, when genes are located close together on a chromosome, it is very well possible that the genes are inherited as a pair.

This has to do with the way chromosomes form the parents cross-over genetic information during reproduction. It is an exemption on Mendel's law of independent assortment and Mendelian ratio's are not produced.
