Depolarization of a neuron usually results in an action potential.

The sodium ion channels close usually around #+30mV#, which causes the cell to rapidly hyper polarize, and then stabilize at its resting potential.

A refractory period is when the neuron cannot be induced to have another action potential either (i) absolutely, or (ii) relatively. In the former case, it's impossible to induce another; in the latter case, it requires remarkable depolarization to the do so.
