-I am not a petroleum chemist, but here is my understanding of the procedure-

Step 1

You run a GC-FID on a control sample and measure the total area of all the hydrocarbon peaks.

Step 2

Run your degradation experiment. Then run a GC-FID on the degraded sample and measure the total area of all the hydrocarbon peaks.

Step 3

Calculate the degradation efficiency (#"DE"#) according to the formula:

#"DE" = 100 % - A_"s"/A_"c" × 100 %#

where

#A_"s"# = total area of peaks in the sample
#A_"c"# = total area of peaks in the control
