What are elements made of?
Every element is made of atoms with a unique atomic number. The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. This determines the number of electrons that are attracted to the neutral atom, which in turn influence the chemical properties of the element.
The number of neutrons can vary in the atoms of an element but the number of protons in the atoms of an element are always the same.
Elements are made up of atoms.
Atoms are the building blocks of elements. Each element is unique according to its atomic number, which is the number of protons in the nuclei of its atoms. The elements are listed in order of their atomic numbers on the periodic table. So far, 118 elements have been discovered or synthesized.
