A primary source is an original source of information that was created during the time period under study. The person who produces a primary source usually experiences or witnesses the event firsthand. Examples of primary sources include:

  • diaries
  • artifacts
  • autobiographies
  • recording

A secondary source is a source of information that builds upon other sources, some of which may be primary sources.

A textbook is a secondary source because it compiles information from various other places (historical documents, articles, excerpts from letters, etc.)
