To go back to a previous stage

Explanation:

The ego goes back to a previous stage of development rather than handling the situation in an adult manner that would be considered socially unacceptable
E.g. whining rather than using the correct grammar that they have already learnt
The stage you go back to will most probably be the one that you are fixated in

Defence mechanisms:
There are 4 defence mechanism. They are:
1.Repression
2.Denial
3.Regression
4.Displacement
The defence mechanisms are used to help balance the conflict between the Id. Ego and Superego

All these defence mechanisms are unconscious so you have next to no control as to what you chose to do.

They are used by the Ego to control the Id and Superego to help protect us from things that could potentially harm us from psychological threats

They change the reality in the memories to help you to cope with what really happened e.g. victims of abusive crime may deny the fact that they were raped to help them to cope with it

If they are used too much then in the long term the person could become psychologically harmed and begin to produce behaviour that is considered socially unacceptable by society to help them to escape from reality
