Explanation:

In 1851, Leon Foucault used a pendulum to demonstrate the earth's rotation. As you can see in the gif below, the pendulum was observed to rotate about, and the only explanation for this was that the world was spinning.

To calculate earth's rate of rotation, all you have to do is time how long it takes a pendulum like this to make a full ${360}^{o}$ rotation, and that is one day.
