# What are hydrocarbons?

Well, they are called $\text{hydrocarbons}$ for a reason.........
Saturated hydrocarbons have general formula ${C}_{n} {H}_{2 n + 2}$. Each degree of unsaturation, i.e. each olefinic bond, or ring junction, reduces the hydrogen count BY TWO; i.e. olefins and cylcoalkanes have general formula ${C}_{n} {H}_{2 n}$.
