For some reason, I believe it is correct usage to say `"I need forceps"`, and incorrect usage to say `"I need a pair of forceps"`. `"Forceps, tweezers, tongs, pliers, clamps"` are the same grasping instrument; and obviously they can be small or big, such as the forceps used to assist in childbirth.
