This was the culminating battle of the Texas Revolution. General Santa Anna was captured after the Battle leading to the end of the War.

Explanation:

Santa Anna was hoping to wrap up the Texas revolution and hurry back to Mexico City to firm up his hold on the Mexican Government.
He was commanding a relatively small number of troops and chose a weak position to defend. An early morning attack by the Americans quickly routed the Mexicans. Revenge seeking by the Texans led to substantial deaths on the Mexican side.

The Texans had been on the run since the Alamo and only the defeat and capture of Santa Anna could have ended the war with this amount of speed and success. Santa Anna had spread out his troops in order to mop up the Texan resistance and dominate the large area that he wanted to reclaim.

Santa Anna's overconfidence and several other factors cost him the battle.

If Santa Anna had not been captured Texas may today be much smaller or not in existence at all.
