I assume you are talking about prime factorization. Every number is made up of prime factors, so that you can write it as a product of it's prime factors.

A common method of finding a number's prime factors is by using a factor tree.


This method involves splitting the original number into two of it's factors. You continue until all of the ends of the branches are prime numbers. (A prime number is a number which is only divisible by itself and 1).

You then write the number as a product of it's factors (you multiply them all together).

So; #8 = 2*2*2#

This is also written as #2^3#.
