Fimbriae are short, fine (3-10 nm diameter), hairlike appendages in many Gram negative bacteria which functions for adhesion to solid surfaces and not for motility. Pili on the other hand are larger than fimbriae (9-10 nm diameter) and are used for bacterial mating.
