The pupil is actually a hole surrounded by the iris . This structure is just in front of the lens of the eye (see attached diagrammatic representation).

Depending on the brightness of light incident upon the eye, the iris contracts or expands, causing the pupil to reduce or increase in brighter or dimmer light respectively.
