They managed to make segregation illegal.

Explanation:

The struggle against segregation was hard but it was successful since it led to several major laws being passed in the sixties, (Civil Rights Act 1964, Voting Rights Acts of 1965 and 1968).

They made their cause heard on the national scale, the most flamboyant example being the march on Washington one hundred years after the first emancipation proclamation(28th August 1963).
