AIM was modelled after the Black Panthers in order to protect Indians from police violence, it was created in 1969 in Minneapolis, one of the few cities with a high proportion of Indians( due to the policy of relocation.

Civil Disobedience was used for instance in Wounded Knee( the site was occupied for three months in 1973) in South Dakota close to the Pine Ridge Reservation. AIM was part of the Indian Civil Rights Movement known as Red Power just like IAT which occupied the island of Alcatraz from 1969 to 1971.
